Trying to balance the scales for Expectant Black Families By Bringing Joy Back to Black Birth

What is Nubian Moms Program?

Nubian Moms is a program under Healthy Black Pregnancies designed to provide social support, care navigation and access to resources to Black women throughout their perinatal journeys (before, during and after pregnancy).

Why does it exist?

Nubian Moms program exists because Black women experience more stress-related complications related to obstetric racism and other social determinants of health during pregnancy, labor and delivery. Evidence shows that support through their journey helps.

Mission

To assist Black women in the Twin Cities metro area with needed support during their pregnancy and early postpartum journey so as to alleviate stressors that may lead to preterm birth or low-birth-weight babies.

Vision

Our vision is to improve the perinatal experience of every Black woman we touch and see the disparities experienced in the Maternal Health of Black women reduced and eventually eliminated in the Twin Cities Metro and Beyond!

Our Values

Accountability

As practitioners we believe the families we serve and the medical systems are equal stakeholders in creating a more equitable maternal health landscape for Black families.

Collaboration

We believe the work of promoting Black maternal health must be done in collaboration and cooperation with systems, community partners, and families in order to advance our mission and vision.

Compassion

We take action to foster relationships where our participants know that their humanity is valued and expect that treatment universally.

Advocacy

We believe in standing with and for our clients while promoting opportunities to increase their own self-advocacy with medical providers, systems, policy makers and beyond.

Engagement is Transformational

We intentionally create space for engagement and believe in the power of showing up for each other and being the solution to our own healing by virtue of community building.

Culturally Responsive

We center the Black experience and allow it to guide us in how we perform our work and create our programming.

Client Testimonials

  • “I like the feeling of community, I love that it has that aspect, I love what yoga class is, I love that it brings structure to moms. Working moms, staying at home moms, just all moms and black moms at that. People who are normally left out in many things, so its a very great community to be in.”

  • “I wish more black moms knew there was a community for you to be in, regardless of what the circumstance is, regardless of how you got yourself into that circumstance or how you just happened to fall upon it, regardless. You know it’s just some things are not about how you got there but the fact that you are there and Nubian Moms is a place where you will have community, you’ll have the backup, and the community to support you!”
